Vaput in the mood of #Finland100

Finland became an independent state on 6 December 1917 and celebrates with thousands of events all over the country. The theme of Finland’s centenary celebration year is ‘Together’ - a perfect theme for a choir!

Vaput has lived the whole year in the mood of Finland100. The year started with innovative Finland100 concerts of our vocal group Tuulantei together with the Kamarikuoro Sonore. The concerts combined Finnish music, history, theatre, and food.

In Spring we had a church concert and the traditional Vappu - First of May - coffee concert. Together with The Finnish Association of Women's Choirs, Vaput also organized an open week-end course for female choir singers. The big project was taking part in the national festival for amateur musicians organized every five years by Sulasol. The festival was, of course, a Finland100 event celebrating Finnish music.

Planning of a very different concert started also in Spring: Vaput organized a Finland100 forest concert in the Pyhä-Häkki National Park in August. Mieskuoro Sirkat and Kamarikuoro Sonore joined Vaput, and scouts organized a forest cafe for the choirs and guests alike. About 600 people took part in our event in the middle of a forest! During the same day, Nature Day 26.8., there were choirs singing in every national park in Finland.

After a couple of other concerts Vaput sang in the marathon concert of The 100 most beautiful Finnish choir songs in Jyväskylä. 20 choirs from all over Central Finland performed their favourite choir songs in a massive 6 hour concert streamed live by the national radio.

No wonder then that our programme in the international choral festival and competition Canta al Mar contains Finlandia!

Oh, one more Finland100 activitiy this year: The Finnish Association of Women's Choirs asked the members to sing its theme song "Laulua elämä soi" every 6th day each month. A group of Vaput has had fun with pop-up concerts singing this song all over Jyväskylä from shopping centres to the harbour.
